In Search of Excellence:  Still good advice for today's public square leaders

Interesting review of oldie but goodie book, In Seach of Excellence, by Tom Peters.  Still today it's eight principles of management still very applicable today.  Worth reading this re-review and personally rethininking Tom Peters theories and principles.

Prison Reform in Norway A Leadership Opportunity in the Public Square

Maybe as we look at the poverty cycle and the impact on the "opportunity gap" we should take a look at what Norway is doing now in their prisons.  Closing the Opportunity Gap should include what we do in prisons and what we do with ex prisoners as they mainstream into society.  Education  gaps need to be closed and that means GED reforms and pushes, post secondary career training, and baccalaureate opportunities.  All of this needs to begin with sentencing guideline reforms and related issues.    NYT http://nyti.ms/1HMmyZ2

Leadership or Panderimg?

Chicago Mayor Emanuel floats naming Chicago airport after Barack Obama," by Adam B. Lerner: "When asked at a candidate forum at Chicago State University why he was no longer supporting his own proposal to name two high schools after Obama and influential religious and community leader Arthur Brazier, Emanuel said that he was still looking for ways to 'acknowledge people who have done significant things.' 'We have an airport, two of them, you know, Midway Airport, O'Hare Airport,' Emanuel said. '[Obama and Brazier] are people who have been transformative in the city of Chicago." Do We Need A State Board of Education? Amend the Constitution?

Maybe the issue is also that we should have a debate on whether we still need a Michigan Department of Education? Should we have an elected State Board of Education? Is there constitutional independence helping or hurting Michigan education in the 21st Century. Been awhile since we debated this issue, but since the State Board of Education raised the constitution as an issue, why not talk about this aspect of the constitution also? http://on.freep.com/1bdLkqQ
